Our Story
Growing up in Sunderland, at 19, Ian began his career in accountancy at the National Audit Office, qualifying as a Chartered Accountant at 25. At 26, he moved to KPMG to work with private sector clients and take on greater management responsibility. Those years gave him a strong foundation in financial rigour, governance, and organisational thinking. But what he was always working towards was a business of his own, something he could be genuinely excited to get up and work on every day.
At 29, the moment had come. Ian had been putting money aside and was in a position to buy his first home. But he knew that if he did, the likelihood of then taking the risk on starting his own business was slim. He chose the business, and Lago Homecare was born. But the story behind Lago runs deeper than ambition.
Ian’s grandparents played a profound role in his life, and it is their story that sits at the heart of everything Lago Homecare does. Married for over 70 years and both living well into their 90s, they remained together in their own home, exactly as they had always wished. Ian saw first-hand what that meant to them. The comfort of familiar surroundings. The dignity of a routine they had chosen. The quiet reassurance of being in a place that was truly theirs, with the person they loved beside them.
Sadly, Ian’s grandparents are no longer with us. But their influence on everything Lago Homecare does remains profound. Their legacy continues every day, through the work of a team committed to helping people across Teesside and North Yorkshire live independently and comfortably at home, for as long as they wish to do so.
Lago Homecare was established in Yarm in 2023 and built from the ground up on the principle that quality of care and quality of working life are not competing priorities. They are the same priority. Today, Ian remains closely involved in every aspect of the business, from recruitment and training to care planning and compliance. He believes that the decisions made in these early years will define what Lago becomes, and he holds the team to the same high standard he holds himself.
